Very Very Sexy Radio: Champlain In 60 Seconds!

I helped to pick out what shots should be in video along with other things such as locations. We really just all worked together an no one was really stuck doing one thing.

I personally feel I deserved a grade of somewhere in the A range along with all of my team as we all worked together and put an equal amount of effort into the VVSR announcement.

The hardest aspect of making the video was the actual editing if I had not had people in the group that new how to edit I think the video would not have turned out as well as it did.

The most rewarding aspect of making the video for me was the actually process. I had never filmed anything before so I am happy that I now have a vague idea of how to do it.

A Day In The Life

Google Images Massmediaworld
In today’s world there are so many different media outlets that have a profound impact on society and ones life. Eight media outlets that have a daily impact on my life and many others are sound recording, radio, television, movies, the Internet, magazines and newspapers. Each of these media outlets can be referred to as mass media as they have been designed to reach large audiences from all over the world. This essay will focus on “a day in the life” of an average person (me) and how much of an impact they have and the relationship I have with each of the eight media outlets.

It’s 8:30am and my alarming is furiously buzzing for my attention. I quickly dress and grab my bags as I head downstairs waiting for my taxi to the airport. While in the cab I listen to The Shins, one of my favourite bands on my ipod something I do frequently while travelling whether it is car, train, bus or plane. Once I boarded the plane I consistently listen to my MUSIC the whole trip only stopping when it is mandatory to turn off all electrical devices on the plane. Music is such a part of my every day life that I can’t imagine life without easy access to it through programs such as itunes that I use too listen to music for hours a day. According to Media & Culture (79) “by 2008 iTunes had sold more than four billions songs and had become the No. 1 music retailer in the USA, surpassing Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart.”

After checking in at Burlington Airport I have time to waste at the gate so decide to watch Californication, which is a TELEVISION show that can be found on Showtime, on my laptop on a DVD. “Nearly 90 percent of American homes today are equipped with VCRs and/or DVD players, which are used for two major purposes: movie rentals and time shifting” (Media & Culture 166). This is one of my favourite shows and although I have seen all the current seasons I am now re-watching them all in anticipation of the new one coming out in January 2011.

When I finally get to my Dads apartment in New York City no one is there so I decide to go on to the INTERNET and of coarse check my Facebook account. While browsing through the countless pages of my friends Facebook pages “Facebook grew at a rate of more than two million global users a month, and by 2008 had sixty million user” (Media & Culture 53) I stop to turn on my Dads itunes music. Unfortunately my Dad does not have wireless Internet so I was stuck using one of his computers, which bothers me as I am so attached to my own MacBook. After I have spent a sufficient amount of time wasted browsing pointless websites on Stumble I decide to preoccupy myself with something else.

I spot The New York Times on the kitchen table and decide to have a quick browse. I don’t usually read NEWSPAPERS but considering I was bored it was something to do. I found it odd that my Dad even had a hardcopy of the paper as he usually relies on his Kindle to read the paper. I only get to the first few pages before I am bored, as I prefer to read the latest headlines online like many others as I feel its straight to the point and I don’t have to flip through pages and pages of articles that I have no desire to read. According to Media & Culture (274) online newspapers are truly taking advantage of the flexibility the Internet offers. “ Because space is not an issue, newspapers can post online stories and reader letters that they weren’t able to print in the paper edition.”

As I get into the Taxi I realize I have forgotten my ipod, which I find incredible annoying as I am stuck listening to the boring RADIO station the driver has on. I don’t usually listen to the radio that much as im never really in a car and whenever I am I always just listen to my ipod as I hate that radio stations play the same few songs over and over again as well as have endless amounts of radio advertisements “About 8% of all U.S. spending on media advertisements goes to radio stations” (Media & Culture 136).

Later in day I find myself in the supermarket with my Dad and like always I have to the front to pick up a magazine to read as I follow my dad around. These particular magazines are often referred to as gossip magazines or “supermarket tabloids push the limits of both decency and credibility” (Media & Culture 301). I personally don’t usually purchase MAGAZINES I think they are a waste of money and if I am going to read anything it has to be a book but I love having a quick browse to pass the time.

I didn’t actually have any experience with a BOOK as I was on break and avoid them as much as possible during that time, which is probably not a good thing I was once an avid reader. According to Media & Culture (324) the average college student spent between $921 and $988 on textbooks and supplies”, with that kind of figure its no one wonder I am currently avoiding all non required reading for a while.

After a long day I decide to watch a movie but my choices are severely limited as my Dad only has a few that I am interested in. I decide on Knocked Up as I have not seen in ages and it’s always a good choice. This movie is classified in the comedy genre and according to Media & Culture (223) “a genre or category, in which conventions regarding similar characters, scenes, structures and themes recur in combination.” If my Dad had wireless Internet I probably would have just watched an instant play on Netflix on my laptop but unfortunately I was out luck.

It’s hard to comprehend what the world would be like without media. It’s absolutely crazy to think just how much modern society relies on it and how much it has taken over everyone’s lives. By taking Media and Society I now realize and understand the power of media much more than I did previously, which is something I am very happy about as I think it will help me a lot in my future.

Media Mediation #4: Burton is always right.

Burton logo from google.com images

I recently watched Burton Snowboards Backyard Productions documentary Burton-For Right or Wrong. It was a good documentary as it included various locations from all over the world ranging from Tahoe, California to New Zealand as well as many of the top snowboarders from all over the world such as Shaun White, Kelly Clark and Mads Jonssen.

Throughout the documentary a few questions frequently come up and they are “What is snowboarding?” and ”what does it mean to be a professional snowboarding?” Therefore they are using Rhetorical Questions to get a point across to the audience.

It also engages the Limbic brain a lot as there is a lot of fast upbeat music throughout the whole production which goes perfectly with the amazing tricks which keeps the audience entertained. Humour is also used throughout the film as many of the snowboarders who are interviewed such as Jeremy Jones are incredibly funny and entertaining to listen to.

I really enjoyed the film as it was highly entertaining and gave the viewer a unique opportunity to see the high and lows of being a professional snowboarded.

Media Mediation # 3 Facebook: How Many Friends Do You Have?

(facebook logo from google.com images)

The creation of Facebook has had many cultural and social impacts on today’s society worldwide and is arguable one of this generation biggest contributions. It allows people who may never meet to communication online and keep in contact with old friends.

A few weeks ago I was able to go and see The Social Network with friends. The movie follows Facebook creator Mark Zuckerburg on his trials and tribulations while creating the social network website while attending Harvard University in 2003. The quote on the movie poster “you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies” is 100% accurate in Zuckerburg’s case as it would be an understatement to say annoyed a few people. Throughout the movie we see an idea created into a billion dollar company in a few short months.

Throughout this media experience both the Limbic and Neo-cortex were constantly in action. The use of music, which either was upbeat or calm caused the audiences emotions to be affected by what, was occurring on the screen. The film ended with a few facts about the company such as “Facebook has more than 500 million users” gets the audience thinking about just how much Facebook has an effect on everyday life and how much more could Facebook possible expand.
While watching you can see the Cultural Shift as Facebook goes from being relatively unknown to a worldwide phenomenon as more and more people sign up each day and become “addicted” to Facebook.

Overall I really enjoyed the film as it was interesting to watch about the creation and the creators of such a powerful website such as Facebook. I feel this film is something that future generations will watch as although Facebook may not have such an impact to them personally say in 50 years they will be able to watch this film and see how much it impacted today’s society!

Triune Brain: Not only is the neo-cortex brain being used as the magazine is filled with articles but the Limbic brain is also actively used. There are many pictures and articles that that cause the reader to fell a certain emotion. Much of the advertisements, which can be found throughout the magazine, have a Limbic effect.

Midterm Part Two Reflection

1. I have learnt how much media has changed over time and how much it has had an effect on society. I have also learnt how many types of media there are and how they all intertwine with each other.

2. I have learnt that I need to take more time when I’m reading a text to think about its key issues. Having to blog about each chapter has taught me to think about a text chapter more than I usually would.

3. I would try to take more care in updating my blog and try and get more involved.

4. I don’t think I would have you do anything differently as you have been clear and concise about what you expect from us since day one.

5.
• Power Tools: I think the power tools are very useful as they help me to understand and analyse more that I think I usually would. Using them has taught me a lot about different aspects of media.
• Blog: Although I don’t like blogging I think it is a useful and necessary tool to be able to use as it seems to be the next big thing and taking over society. I also like that we have easy access to what we have to do and that it is a reliable source.
• Personal Blog: Again I feel the same way about my personal blog as I don’t like blogging but do see it as an important skill to know how to use. It is also to have to analyse a text and then post it digitally.
• Quizzes: I find the in-class quizzes as very useful as it forces me to review the power tools every class therefore is a great study tool when it comes to tests like the midterm. I don’t think I realised how useful the quizzes were until I actually started studying for the midterm and realised I already knew a lot of the information.
• Films: viewing the films and then analysing them using the different power tools is very useful. I feel this way because it allows me to use the tools in a test like scenario. I also like that when I now view as commercial I am thinking of all the power tools that companies use to grab the viewers attention.
• Textbook: reading the textbooks is useful as its an interesting read and I am constantly learning something new about media and how much it has rapidly changed over time.
